RE: Seinfeld Bus

It worked OK for me, after a ~40 second wait.

RE: Norcold ref

Both gas and electric do the same thing, heat the boiler. That would imply that if the electric heater is operating the refer OK, then the gas flame is not heating the boiler sufficiently. Agree with ScottG, a good cleaning might fix this.

RE: KVAR Energy Controller Electric Savings ?

As I suspected. I bet 95% of the savings goes away when the motor is loaded up. Not quite true. The inductive reactance of the motor remains more or less a constant. The resistive portion changes as the motor loads up and eddy currents are produced. PF correction corrects the inductive portion. As the current load increases, the uncorrected current will be a smaller percentage of the total load but it will still be the same current. The current not corrected goes all the way back to the source and returns, thus doing no work, but still increases total current in the system.

RE: KVAR Energy Controller Electric Savings ?

Correcting the power factor will reduce the current flowing in the wiring and reduce resulting heat. This increases overall efficiency. http://www.allaboutcircuits.com/vol_2/chpt_11/4.html

RE: Another Battery Question

6 volt batteries come in many sizes. Maybe, with some research, you can find two 6 volt batteries that will use most of your space, and you will get tremendous battery capacity. Same is true for large 12 volt sizes. I don't have the web page handy, but I have seen batteries made for industrial uses that might work for you. As many have said above, 6 volt batteries need to be in even numbers.

RE: Restricting Current Into a Heater?

Correction to above, light dimmers use thyristors, not triacs.

RE: Restricting Current Into a Heater?

There are industrial size dimmers that can easily handle 1500 watts. They use triacs and have zero crossover detection so they are not noisy and very low power loss, and not very expensive. To a dimmer, a heater and a light bulb look the same. Another option, if you more than one heater element, wire them in series for half power.

RE: A/C problems

Classic symptoms of compressor cycling OFF and ON before the head pressure dies down. It will draw a lot of amps trying to start until the thermal CB trips. Try setting the thermostat to a much colder setting so the compressor stays on all the time. Also, run the fan on HIGH.

RE: Inverter problem

How are you reading the voltage? Most multimeters will not correctly read the output of an inverters "modified sine wave", really a stepped square wave. If it will properly light a 110 volt light bulb, its probably working OK. The unloaded output is not well regulated, so read the voltage with some load on it. (Such as the light bulb.) Based on the curling iron test, its probably working OK.

RE: generator will not run with coach running???

Flyright, AC power amps goes to 55 amps when reving main engine. What is AC amps at idle? How is the inverter / Charger off? (Disconnect fuse or wire.) Need to isolate the 12Volt and AC power systems. The only connection between the 12 volt system and AC system should be via the inverter. I think this is where the problem probably is. Connect a voltmeter to the coach battery, take readings at idle and revved up. Let me know the results. Try turning off AC main breaker, If the problem goes away, then turn main back on, and try each remaining breaker to isolate.

RE: Tow Car recomendations

ns911: We had a jeep cherokee toad also, weighed it, was 4100 lbs. Currently tow a 2001 Blazer (S10) also 4100 lbs. If I were buying today, I like the VW golf TDI, but it can only be towed with manual. The Chevy HHR can be towed with automatic, great MPG and it has cargo room, but it feels a little cramped in the drivers seat.

RE: tire question

Much depends on their history, how stored, protected from sunlight, were they ever run underinflated / overloaded etc. Its a tough one to answer, generally, seven years is considered long enough. I replaced a set of the same size tires last year with a date stamp of Jan 2001. No problems and lots of tread left, but too old. They were Goodyears.

RE: Do you have a awning screen room?

I think they take too long to setup and takedown for the short stays we enjoy. They are nice, but you also have to watch for wind that can cause damage.

RE: Keep MH Plugged In or Not?

Without direct sunlight, solar isn't much good. Perhaps you could just charge it every 1 - 2 months. If you want the fridge on all the time, I think you will need to be plugged in. I have run 2 weeks with the fridge on propane OK but that was about it.

RE: requirements for a Motor Home

Someone stated above that the W/D requires a full hookup. Not all do. Our present unit does not require any hookups, our last one did require at least a sewer connection. We have done 4 loads while dry camping without any hook ups. As stated above, they don't take all that long per load and they are fully automatic so you just turn them on and come back later when done.

RE: water pump - eletrical issue?

Here is a link to the intellitec switch, this looks like what I have. There should be an inline fuse from the controller to the water pump. Check this first, and check the fuse housing, I've seen the housing crack and fail to hold pressure on the inline fuse. http://www.intellitec.com/pdfs/MOTOR%20CTRLS_web/motorcontrol.htm

RE: water pump - eletrical issue?

The pump power comes from a logic module. Your three switches tell the logic module to turn the power to the pump ON/OFF. Don't know much about this module but I will look into it, as I have the same. Trace the wire from the pump back and you should find the module. What is the make and model of your MH?

RE: High Altitude and Generators

Now that is an interesting question.. Propane.. I would be interested in knowing if anyone here has the experience of using propane to run a generator at different altitudes and how much altitude has an effect on that setup. The primary problem is that at high altitudes the amount of O2 is less, so you need less fuel to have the proper fuel/air ratio. All newer fuel injection engines use an oxygen sensor in the exaust to monitor fuel mixture and combustion, making adjustments through the computer. Some early fuel injection (Bosch) used a "barometric pressure sensor" to provide that input to the computer to regulate fuel flow at various altitudes. My last motorhome had propane. It lost power at elevation as expected. Closed loop systems simply keep the air / fuel ratio correct, but cannot compensate for elevation except to keep air / fuel correct. If not, the loss is more than 3% / 1000 feet. The ony way to prevent this is some kind of intake pressurization such as turbo charging.
